I have to say that from the beginning of the first series until now, I have personally judged everybody in the show, on your performance, at the time I was first watching a particular episode or season, on the day. And, based on your performance in the ninth episode of season 10 Nathan, I thought that I really wanted to see you relax more, believing in your talent, and finding that silent space where you can anchor yourself - and draw from that silence, and then project and perform. You looked too nervous playing the guitar and singing as a guest in those last 2 segments with Stevie and Charli and I thought that that overtook your performance.
I think Nathan, you've got to work out, I don't know whether it's sometimes you're trying to be cool or just laid back, but what you show normally in the Song of the Week clips in terms of sophistication in your performing style, is what I want to see you do for the whole show; that is the Nathan Foley I reckon that we want to see both in Hi-5 and as a solo performer for the youth market, all right! And, as far as nerves are concerned, yes I was sort of a little overcritical in the past, I probably wasn't fair or balanced in my constructive criticism, I am going to be now. When I'm talking about nerves, just as an example, there's a old saying in Beetlejuice - "It's showtime, baby!" And although there's another saying in The Producers - "Be brutal! Be brutal! Because God knows the public out there will be!" I'm going to try my best in taking a fair and balanced approach in all of my posts from now on, so let's get that straight right now, all right! I promise - NO MORE TENSED-UP NERVES!
I'd like to talk about Stevie now. I think that Stevie, once again the nerves were the thing that affected your solo segment performance with Nathan in the ninth episode of this new series. However, I think that we haven't seen or heard the last of you; I think that perhaps you're a little bit scared to step out of the box that you've created for yourself and I would like to see you expand on what you do beyond just miming with the guitar (or any instrument for that matter) - and not be afraid to take risks; let go of the net and dive right in, and see what happens.
I mean, seeing you on the first week of season 10 the other week, and I've seen you on that DVD that came with The Age newspaper last year, you are a wonderful looking young man, and you've got a very good male voice and a very keen interest in actually wanting to play the instruments you use in your solo segments as well; you've got to combine them all together, and show all of us, the Stevie Nicholson of that, and again, just like what you did out there in that first segment of yours in day one of this new season, again, that's what we want to see Stevie, you were just fantastic like that and with Charli for support - your voice was great, your bongo skills were great, you looked great, that smile, that hairstyle - Gosh, I wish I had that hairstyle! *LOL*
Kellie and Sun, I love both of you; I think you both rock, I think you're both fantastic, and you're both not too Barbie-doll for me this time; I think for a 26-year-old Korean girl like you Sun, and for a 34-year-old ex-Teen Queen like you Kellie, you each have an incredible balanced presence and I think you both have a very, very good possibility of staying involved in this particular children's production for a very long time to come.
Look, with all of you I'm quite surprised because if I was seeing you walking down the street, I wouldn't know who you are; and in this new season, you're different people to what or who was out there performing in the last season when you all had to say goodbye to Tim and Kath, that's for sure. Charli, I think you're fantastic, you worked Nathan brilliantly. I just would like to see a bit more instrumental and vocal diversity on camera, because I could see the others picking up guitars and (in Sun's case) a ukulele in Stevie's segment, but you being left out of that type of sharing even with you and Nathan in your own follow-up segment in that ninth episode; I mean, for Stevie's segment then, with Stevie and Nathan on acoustic guitars, Sun on ukulele, and Kellie on lead guitar, the producers could've at least let you join in on bass.
But I still think you are brilliant. I couldn't fault your performance in that whole second week of new episodes. I especially could not fault your solo segment performance that time with Nathan, I still thought you were fantastic and - I LOVE YA!
And, just with regard to your new life after Hi-5 and moving on to judge now for Battle of the Choirs: just with your presenting voice and your image, your presenting voice and your shorthaired image are now projecting your real mature-lady side even more. Obviously you're taking the notice of your new drama teachers over at NIDA, and now you are ROCKIN'! So just keep going there honey - it's great!
