CWS Pelaw

I know these pics have nothing to do with Hebburn
But I came across them in 'Remember When' maybe
someone worked in the CWS Pelaw.

Hi James, have you any idea when the first photo was taken?? The second lady on the right looks like my grandmother. Dont know if she ever did this kind of work though, will have to ask my Aunts. The family lived in Collingwood Street but moved South in 1937.

I believe they were taken in the 30s according
to the Paper 'Remember When'

I served my time at pelaw as an printer . I think i was the only one who worked at pelaw who did not have a relation there

Aswell as the Pelaw CWS pics there is a two page spread of pics from my website & a great 'plug' from Ray telling readers I'm always on the lookout for old photos.

Such a landmark! and travelling on the bus to Newcastle as a youngster I always saw it as an important part of the Co-op empire,Pelaw polish of course being famous. I wonder if it is a listed building, it looked to have special architectural qualities to me

I believet it is virtually all gone,The only building which is listed and preserved as a result is the factory where the furniture was made.I seldom pass that way these days as I have only have one relative left in that area.My oldest surviving sister still lives in Felling and trained as a machinist at Pelaw when she left the Central School before WW2 until she was drafted into the Land Army.

There's almost nothing left of the CWS 'empire' which once dominated the whole of the south side of Shields Road which stretches the length of Pelaw.

There now only one building left - closer to the Heworth end. This grab from Google Earth illustrates the demise of the CWS in the town.

Fascinating pix, James. The tall chimney with "Pelaw Polish" on it was a landmark, but I never knew about the furniture and quilt workshops - quite a big set-up by the look of it.

They also had a large printing factory in Bill Quay.

In the late 1930's, both of my sisters works at CWS at Pelaw. One worked in the Tailoring and hated it as she never liked sewing. She left in 1940 to work at Baker Perkins, but always called it the bomb factory. My other sister worked in the Drugs Department of CWS, I never found out what the job entailed.

Have recently discovered this wonderful website.As a child in the 40's I have vague memories of seeing the cws building as my mum,brother and myself trudged across the fields from the station to see my nana who I think lived in wardley at that time or is my memory playing tricks . I am also in process of digging into the family history so may well be back for help. Relevant names fielding,henderson and cameron.
