I hope I'm not taking up to much Bandwidth Mike but After viewing the wonderful start Val has made to her Hebburn War Memorial Webpage, I thought I'd try another appeal. The following messages are the postings on the Hebburn Website from August 2006. They were saved by Barry CRAMM who e-mailed them back to me this evening. Who knows, we may get a positive response this time.
More about the Colliery Board School
Posted by Alex BAKER on 20/8/2006, 7:57 pm
On 10th Feb 1921 a Plaque or Tablet was unveiled by Jim BLACK J.P. the then Chairman of Hebburn Council to commemorate the 34 Men, ex Pupils of The Colliery Board School who gave their lives in the 1914-18 War. (34 people from one school, that is phenominal). The names were:- W. ALLEN, T. AMOUR, D. BAINBRIDGE, J. BAINBRIDGE, C. BARKAS, J. BRAMWELL, M. BROWN, T. C. BROWN, J. CHARLTON, T. EVANS, W. FISHWICK, J. FOSTER, D. GAFFING, J. T. GILL, T. BUDDLE, H. GAMBLE, W. GIBBONS, F. GRAY, R. HETHERINGTON, W. LENNON, J. LAVERY, T. MARTIN, J. MASON, W. MILBURN, J. W. MISSELL, J. McKINNEY, J. MORRIS, J. RILEY, R. RODGER, J. SCULLION, J. THOMPSON, J. WIGHAM, D. S. LAWSON, W .Mason. These are the names as they appeared on the War Memorial Plaque or Tablet.
The Memorial disappeared when the school was demolished in about 1963ish. I just wonder if anyone has knowledge of its possible whereabouts or fate. I know of someone who has been searching for the Tablet a good many years now and would be delight to hear of any clues.

Alex, Maybe if a Councillor reads this about the memorial being lost he or she might be able to get a new plaque added to the War Memorial in the Park. Recently the Council have been putting up quite a few sandstone plinths around the area with the name of the village or Estate carved onto them eg Monkton, Hedworth, Fellgate etc.A small memorial shouldn't break the bank.

Just to put things into better perspective, I've made a calculation which although not absolutely correct its still a shocking indication of what our "Masters" are capable of.Suppose the Colliery Board took pupils from 5-14 years old = 9 Yearsor 9 Classes. Each class or year intake say 35 children = 305 pupils. About half would be girls so boys = 152. WWI lasted around 4Yrs & 3 Months = about 4 intakes Equating to (35 X 4) + (35/4) = 140+9 = 149 Pupils About half were girls so 74 were boys. Number of Named Casualties = 34 all boys, so nearly half of the boys in that age group were fatalities. Hebburn Colliery must have been a very sad place to live as were most of our towns
& Villages. Somebody must know what happened to the Colliery Board School Memorial Tablet.

Althouth as you say Alex it is nearly 30 years since the Colliery Board School was demolished, perhaps some of our knowledgible contributors can recall who the Contractor was that demolished it. We live in hope and thank you for that piece of information.
