My grandfather was a private in the D.L.I he married my grandmother on 6th June 1914 aged 22years. He was serving in action in the trenches around Ypres and was killed by a sniper in the late afternoon of 13th August 1915 He was the last man to be killed, at this stage from his regiment because they were pulled back from the front line that evening. He has no marked grave, but his name is listed on the Ploegesteert Memorial.
He never saw my Dad, and my Dad only had a few small faded snaps of him, taken in his army uniform.
Years after my Dad died, a cousin of his found two photos, one of my grand parents together, and one of my grandfather, dressed in a really smart suit, with a large wrist watch visible on his wrist, like the trendy ones worn today. But what amazed me most was it was like looking at my two sons, seeing this lovely young man of 23 years, and how my sons look so much like him.
May he rest in peace.
