The thread below reminded me that I had witnessed the carving of a huge oak Polar Bear at a Bakewell woodworking show. I subsequently attended the unveiling of it at the National Arboretum as part of the 49th Divisional Memorial (WW2). I went there with a coachload of veterans of the Hallamshire Battalion (The York & Lancaster Regt). I have been associated with these men since the early 1980s.
As usual,I will be attending the Remembrance Service at The York & Lancaster Regimental Memorial in Western Park, Sheffield, this Sunday. As always, my wife and I will be escorting one of those veterans (Arthur Green) on the day. Sadly, he is the last 'Hallam' standing who still attends that memorial service and now in his 90s.
I have noticed in very recent years that there are more and more attending this service and they are getting ever younger in average age. It is a pitiful reflection on the fact that our young lads are falling in new foreign conflicts again and have to be mourned by there own generations.
I watched a TV program the other night which dealt with huge sums of money be expended by a few scientists seeking Black Holes in outer space. You don't need to go that far...they are being created here, once again, on the surface of our own planet.
