This thread reminded me of what my cousin told me a while ago. His Dad had been advised to keep his house deeds in a metal box, on a bit of wood, over the top of the water tank in the loft. The person who told him to do this said that in the event of a fire, the wood would burn, then the metal box would drop into the water tank and the contents would be safe! Not sure whether this would actually work or not, but funny to think about someone doing it.
