Hi Jeff,
As you might know, I used to shape up my sides when I had the horseshoe flat, and I've been cutting hair for years - so I have just about every clipper and blade available to me. I experimented a LOT, and found that the triple blade rotary electric seemed to do the best job of taking the stubble to skin; it also lasted longer and produced no irritation.
I tightened the top DAILY! I preferred the Wahl red balding clippers over the white cricket flattop Silkcomb. The cut was precise, and the white comb is thinner, making the hair shorter. They don't make that comb any more, but you can probably find one online.
The summer cut term is ambiguous, in that it could mean either shorter or longer. My guess would be longer, since too much direct sun can cause problems: it sure did for me! I kept my horseshoe center cut to the bone, and developed a skin tag in the center that I had for several years. Only since I let my hair grow has it finally gone away!
My cut now continues to be shaved on the sides and back; but it goes as long as 4 - 5 inches on top, and my bangs are almost to my eyebrows.
