"Ten seconds to lift-off. 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1...the landing strip is complete...you now have a fresh Flattop!" In honor of Rocket Man Duane "Digger" Carey's 52nd birthday on April 30th, I'm saluting Mr. Carey as my Flattop Friday Flattopper of the Week.
Duane received his commission in the US Air Force in 1981, and retired at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel twenty-three years later. Digger has logged more than 3,700 hours of flying in more than 35 types of aircraft.
Mr. Carey was selected as a NASA astronaut candidate in April 1996. In 2002, he served as a pilot of the STS-109 Columbia space flight...logging in over 262 hours in space. Today, Duane travels to schools and teaches children about his experience as an astronaut.
Digger has earned the "Distinguished Flying Cross" award and three air medals. Additionally, as an avid motorcycle enthusiast, he was awarded the "American Motorcyclist Association Hazel Kolb Brighter Image Award".
After reviewing these 54 flattering Flattie photographs of Mr. Carey, I'm sure that you'll be as astro-nuts about his Flattop as I am. Please take note that a few of these Flattop pictures of Digger shown with the schoolchildren, have been taken as recently as September 2008. Gentlemen, if you've been mooning over Flatties for a long time...it's time that you have a barber flatten you out!
