On Flattop Tuesday (April 28, 2009), I had my barber flatten me out. It has now been slightly over a year since I've been dedicated to requesting the length of a Shaved High & Tight Flattop at the barber shop. While my barber followed his usual procedure of applying a mixture of hot lather & shaving cream to the sides & back of my scalp, and shaving off the remaining stubble with a straight razor...for some reason it just didn't seem as smooth & tight as it usually is. Perhaps the unusual humid weather in the Garden State this time of year had the stubble growing faster than usual or the shave wasn't as close due to my barber using a different shaving cream this time? After I arrived home from an evening meeting slightly before midnight, I found myself doing something that I never did before...I actually was applying shaving cream to the sides & back of my scalp, and shaving with the grain & against the grain of my scalp...until the sides & back of my Shaved HnT Flattop were as smooth as silk. Gee, it had been only eight hours since I left the barber shop, and here I was shaving the back & sides of my scalp again before the day was officially over. Yikes! I shaved an area four finger lengths above my ears, leaving enough of a blended area in between the bristles on top and the shaved sides & back. The following three evenings I have continued to apply the lather & shave the sides & back of my flattering Flattie as smooth as silk. Yes, I know that I need to stop shaving my scalp soon or the top will begin to look too overgrown in comparison to the sides & back.
I used a "Gillette Mach3 M3 Power Razor" (with a battery inside) & "Neutrogena Razor Defense Shave Gel" to shave the sides & back of my Shaved HnT Flattop. I've heard of other Flattoppers who use a Gillette Fusion razor, a Norelco electric razor (with the three heads) or a Braun electric razor (with the long rectangular head)...to tighten up the back & sides of their flattering Flatties.
My two questions to the Buzzboard subscribers are these:
1) Which razor & shaving lotion do you use to shave the sides & back of your scalp?
2) If you sculpt your own Flattop or tighten it up in between haircuts, which electric clippers & clipper blades do you use?
Please don't get the impression that I no longer desire visiting the barber shop, because that is not the case. It is simply that I want to preserve a Shaved HnT Flattop for a few days instead of a few hours, as my stubble tends to grow in the sides & back at a quick pace...and I've also been considering switching to an electric razor to shave my beard too.
By the way...on Tuesday my barber informed me that he discovered the photographs on my Flickr.com account, of him flattening me out. He additionally commented that he tends to get a "summer haircut", which is a #2 on the sides & back during the hotter weather. I'm confused...what's a "summer haircut"? Gee, does this mean that some guys don't sport shaved sides & back all year long? How can that be? LOL!
Thank you for your time & feedback!
Buzzed Wishes!
