"Listen up you little maggot...I spoke with your pop. He told me to make a man out of his pretty boy, and give you a High & Tight Flattop." In honor of R. Lee Ermey's 65th birthday on March 24th, I'm saluting him as my Flattop Friday Flattopper of the Week.
Ronald Lee Ermey enlisted in the US Marine Corps in 1961. From 1965-1967, he spent two years serving as a drill instructor at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego, California. In 1968, Mr. Ermey was sent to Vietnam, where he spent fourteen months with the Marine Wing Support Group 17...and then later served two tours of duty in Okinawa, Japan. After suffering several injuries, Lee was given a medical discharge at the rank of Staff Sergeant in 1972. Later in 2002, he received an honorary promotion to Gunnery Sergeant...becoming the first retired member of the US Marine Corps to be promoted. Using his GI benefits...Mr. Ermey moved to the Philippines, and enrolled in the University of Manilla...where he studied Criminology and Drama.
Mr. Ermey first broke into the movie industry, when he attained the role of a Marine drill instructor in the 1978 film, "The Boys In Company C"...later followed in the Francis Ford Coppola film, "Apocalypse Now", where he had the role on an Air Cavalry Officer and also doubled as the technical advisor for the movie. His role of a drill instructor in "The Boys In Company C" took the notice of Stanley Kubrick...who initially only hired Lee to serve as technical director for his 1987 film, "Full Metal Jacket". However, after Mr. Ermey submitted an instructional tape...Mr. Kubrick changed his mind, and cast Lee in the memorable role of Gunnery Sergeant Hartman...a legendary film character, which Mr. Ermey was able to write his own dialogue and improvise on the movie set...requiring only two or three takes per scene...a known rarity in a Kubrick film. Lee's landmark performance as the infamous drill instructor earned him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Supporting Actor and an award for Best Supporting Actor by the Boston Society of Film Critics. Lee since then has appeared and/or done voice over work in approximately 60 films and various television shows & video games...usually cast in the role of a drill instructor or other authority figure. Currently, Mr. Ermey can be seen almost every Flattop Friday on his television show on the History Channel titled, "Mail Call"...where the subject matter is dictated by viewer email response...ranging from weaponry, tactical matters or military history...as well as comedic bits in the character of a drill instructor.
After reviewing these flattering Flattie photos of Mr. Ermey, I'm sure that you'll be as gung-ho about his Flattop as I am. Therefore, I'm certain that you will not want to disappoint the drill instructor...and you'll have those sides and back High & Tight, and the top as flat as the landing deck of an aircraft carrier by 0700 hours. Now drop and give me 25!
Mr. Ermey, your Flattop definitely passes my inspection sir!
Buzzed Wishes & Flattop Dreams!
