When the whole world celebrated the defeat of an enemy from outside? Where Russians, Japanese, Brits, Americans, and Iraqis all found a cause to unite?? Blacks and Jews smoking celebratory cigars?
As hokey as the movie was I have watched it a dozen times. I grew up when most countries of the world looked to this country for guidance and dare I say "salvation". At the same time I grew up in a horrendous America where black folk were still treated like dogs and not even human beings. I've been a dreamer since the day I first became conscious of possibilities.
It has been a dark, dark world for the past decade. There was none of the hope of JFK and his brother Bobby. There was nothing left of the America I was raised to believe in.
Suddenly it is like a new morning has dawned. As a gay man I cannot imagine how flabbergasted, confused and elated that black Americans must feel on this day when darkness suddenly promises to turn to light. I see people in other lands suddenly finding reason to believe in the "American promise" once again.
It's like "Independence Day" on a grand scale. A planet, not merely a nation, celebrating its liberation and its life.
I say, GO BARAK. Take us back to the good times!
