If I hadn't been there specifically to check out someone who was enthusiastic about fixing up a crappy flattop, I would have seen the line ahead of me and just told him I'd be back another day. As it was, I had the whole afternoon free and some difficult friends to avoid, perfect excuses to sit in the air conditioning watching haircuts. It was just one ridiculous day, not the usual wait--his partner was out, he wasn't feeling well, and he got hit with a wedding party and a bunch of Father's Day gift certificates all at once. When I went back, he was waiting for me with an empty shop.
I've always kind of wondered why appointments are considered prissy and the rule is wait your turn at shops that cater to regular guys. Seems to me it would be even more important for wage slaves to be able to plan a quick trip to the barber than for fat cats who can afford to take off whatever time they want from work. And there's certainly no shyness of appointments at the urban, ethnic shops where everybody's plugged into a cell phone; it's just the "traditional" white man's shops that are that way.
