I find myself these days "caught between a rock and a hard place". My ever balding/thinning hair leaves me little choice but a clipper burr/shave. I've learned to live with that.
But -- for reasons I cannot explain what should be a simple cut that it would seem like I could do myself isn't. When I cut it myself it is never the same as a barber cut -- and I can't do the eyebrows and ear hair. So, I've been going to one particular barber every time I'm in Salem, MA.
The thing is he is a "no nonsense" barber to the nth degree. Very aggressive. The thing is he does my head in five minutes flat. He charges $13 and I give him $15.
Think about it. If he could line up a bunch of men needing only the same he would be making near $200/hr!!
There is something wrong with that. But all of us suffer from the habits of those who don't care for their appearance. He repeatedly tells me stories about customers who come to his shop for a crew cut but let it grow long in between visits and only appear every 6 to 8 months! "whether they need it or not".
There is something wrong with this picture. I feel like I'm subsidizing their haircuts.
