Posted by MarkWilliamson A "recon haircut" is a very extreme version of the high and tight or horseshoe flattop hairstyle that is worn almost exclusively by males in the U.S. military service or law enforcement. The name of the haircut is a reference to U.S. Marine and U.S. Army reconnaissance units, where this type of extreme haircut is thought to have originated. It is also common among U.S. Marine Drill Instructors and Army Rangers. Like a high and tight, a recon cut involves total shaving of the hair on the back and sides of the head, but the distinguishing feature of a "recon" is that the hair is shaved to the scalp well above the crown line, leaving a relatively small amount of hair on the very top of the head. The remaining oval-shaped area of hair may be cut to a uniform length, or may be further clipped to the scalp in the very center to achieve a horseshoe shape. This type of haircut is typically worn by men to present a militaristic and intimidating appearance, rather than to present an aesthetically pleasing look. Many, if not most, "recons" are self-cut with electric clippers by the wearer, or else cut by another Marine/solider in the barracks or in the field. Although recognized within the military subculture, few professional barbers would understand the term "recon" if asked for one by a client.
