Posted by FlatsVA on 4/10/2007, 0:40:34 The shop always looks busy and lots of short cuts seem to come out of there, so figured I would give it another try. As luck would have it, all of the barbers were busy. The shop is a seven chair shop and two men in the queue before me, so I anticipated which barber I would get. I quickly determined that I would wait for Dave. Dave was giving a kid about 10 a flattop from what looked out to be a grown out Ivy League type cut. I was destined for that chair as the flattop was being executed with great precision, just how I like it. The kid hoped out of the chair and seemed to like his new cut as he stoked the back of his head. Dave indicated that I was next; I sat in the chair, as Dave tightened the barber cape and stated - "flatten her up?" To which I replied, yes. No questions asked about how short or tight on the sides and back, which started to make me nervous. I could hear the hum of the clippers behind me, I figured he must be oiling them, as surely is his going to ask, do you want a #2 on the sides (which I usually request)? The kid’s flattop looked great, so I figured I would just let it play out, and see what happens without intervening. The clippers were applied to the middle of the back of my head, not down at the nape, as Dave firmly pushed my head down so my chin was resting on the cape. I figured this must be#2 and he is going to go shorter at the nape as he proceeded to buzz the middle section of my head from the back to the sides, all of this occurring with my back to the mirror. Dave made a change in the clippers and the nape was attacked, as anticipated, followed by a set of clippers that did some blending as Dave adjusted my head to his liking as he tightened up the sides and back. Dave seemed like a nice enough guy, commented on my flattop, stated I had great hair for the cut, inquired how long I had been wearing it, etc. After cleaning up around the ears and trimming up the sideburns, he attacked the top, first applying which felt like a light amount of butch wax and getting all of the hair to stand at attention. As he did with the kid before me, he applied the clippers to the top center section of my scalp and peeled a path back toward him (created a landing strip), then broke out the flattop comb and leveled out the top and blended the top into the sides with great precision, adjusting my head to meet his needs. Another light coat of wax was applied and the process was repeated, Dave stated looking for all of the "wild grey hairs that do their own thing". I was finally spun around to face the mirror, to see an excellent looking flattop, with the sides probably a 1.5 down to a zero at the nape, and a deck that is level - just as I like it. Dave asked to check it out and see if he missed any thing, or how it looked - it was perfect, I stated. Dave vacuumed off my head and then applied shaving cream and scrapped my neck clean. Much to my surprise, he did not shave around the ears or the sideburns, but other than that an excellent barber shop experience and a well executed flattop that did not require any adjustment/trimming once I got home. Sorry for the long post - but these kind of days does not occur to often.

These days do not happen too often lately - but decided to give a shop in Warrenton, VA a try - I had gone there about a year a go with mixed feelings about the flattop I received and the overall experience.
