Hello
It's been at least three years that I'm been getting a "modified" or actual recon at the barbershop. My regular barber retired and a young barber took over the shop. He knew I was a regular (weekly) getting the top usually cut into a horseshoe or an oval sort of flat, and then the sides shaved with a Mach III.
About a year ago, I watched with interest as a guy (police officier) brought his own razor and the barber shaved his s/b against the grain! I too got the barber to agree (since I'm there every week) to shave me up with one of the Fusion/power razors which I supply the blades, he keeps the razor!
Then it happened over Labor Day weekend. I missed my normal Friday afterwork cut and when I got there Saturday, he was closed. I went to a local Rite Aid and bought a cheap set of clippers and took the guards off, shaved my b/s with the clippers (should I have said cut)!, and then shaved and reshaved against the grain the s/b. I was surprised that I could cut it myself, but I didn't touch the top! This past Fri and went to the shop and told him I had cut and shaved my s/b myself last week. He cut the top down to a #2 horseshoe.
I think I'm starting to like a longer top and am thinking about trying to cut the top to a uniform length. I thinking of a #3 top.
I think this could get interesting as I've already started to move the rear up over the crown with my cheap clippers and shave the rear back.
Have any of you tried to cut the top of a recon? I've been hesitant because of wearing a horseshoe alot, but I think the longer patch seemed interesting before I had the shoe recut.
Any thoughts?
