Posted by Gunny I bought a Toyota Prius. I'm committed to buying American products where they are equivalent, but nothing Detroit has produced comes close. I've had it for about a week and a half and I'm convinced it is the best thing since the invention of sliced bread. If you are considering a hybrid don't be put off by media reports that the EPA mileage estimates are not met in real life experience. They aren't, but the Prius at least still delivers cost savings and simultaneously reduces your "carbon footprint". I don't have any stake in Toyota but my driving experience has been radically changed overnight. EPA rates the Prius at 51 highway and 61 city. Yes, that's right. For some reason in EPA tests those were the results even though most vehicles test better on the highway than in city driving. I was driving a gasoline powered Ford Escape with a six cylinder engine. Rated at 21 city and 26 highway. It was actually averaging 20 on mostly highway driving. The new Prius' real life results are 49 for rural road stop and go and 54-56 for open highway, for an average of 51-52 where I live and work. Since I drive about 500 miles a week it cut my gas consumption from 25 to just less than 10 -- a 60% reduction!! Because of the number of miles I cover I'm saving $43 a week. It adds up. I won't tell you it's a powerhouse. It wouldn't win a drag race. But I have had no problems in merging comfortably with highway traffic. Just thought I'd share the info.

I'm telling you this not because I want to let you know that I bought a new car, but because I am so totally amazed by the technology of the new vehicle.
