Yes, by all means let's talk about this democratically elected government in Iraq--a government that has demonstrated no will and no competence to meet any of the major challenges that deperately need to be addressed--a government that needs the support of Shiite militia leaders like Muqtada al-Sadr to survive--a government which permits its Parliamentarians to go on a two-months' vacation while American servicemembers are dying everyday. Oh wait! I heard just yesterday that Parliament may shorten its vacatation to only six weeks or so--that means that only about 150 American soldiers and Marines will die while Parliament does nothing to solve the burning issues facing the Iraqi people. As a liberal, I do not pray for defeat in Iraq. I simply acknowledge, as have many Republicans, that a purely military victory in Iraq is impossible without a political solution--a solution that the democratically elected Iraqi government is incapable of providing. I do not believe that the individual sacrifices of our brave troops are a "stupid waste". On the contrary, I admire them for doing their duty in the face of increasing scepticism about the war. What is a "stupid waste" is a Commander-in-Chief, a Secretary of War and a too-timid top brass who couldn't or didn't want to anticipate what miilions of common Americans could see for themselves--that it is easy to win a "war", but much more difficult to win a "peace".
