Posted by Gunny The news media have now called both Montana and Virginia senate races for the Dems. That gives them control of both houses of Congress for the first time since 1994. While it is not offical -- neither of the Republicans involved has conceeded so far -- the scuttlebutt is that both are "disinclined" to ask for recounts and will accept the verdict of the voters. In the days leading up to the election the various media pundits said this scenario would be like the Dems playing an inside straight in a poker game. It is the best possible scenario. Finally we have nothing further to fear from Dubba! If you have never read the novel I'd suggest you read the new VA senator's original book written just after he had left VietNam, "Fields of Fire". It is far from a "left wing" "cut and run" appeal, but it sure demonstrates an understanding of the grunt whose boots are on the ground. No more "Mission Accomplished" by jerks wearing fake flight suits who never saw combat. I think that is the difference that we will see. Now comes the major test. The American people have resoundly repudiated Bush and his cronies. God Bless America! But now we have reason to ask what the new Congress can accomplish. I for one will not simply applaud every action of the new boys on the block. You should not either. We need to be equally hard on the new comers as we have been on the Republicans. We have the right -- and should -- demand action. They have two years to show us that our votes were not in vain. Let's hope that our trust was not misplaced. If Bush will revert to the compromising "compassionate conservatism" he displayed as governor of Texas and the Dems will get off their ideological high horse (I tend to be one of those 'ideologues") I now believe that there is a real chance for movement. Let's pray that both Bush and Dems will seek middle ground. Wow! Wow! Wow! It is all I can say. We have a chance to put the "us" vs. "them" mentality behind us and work for the common good. I see dawn breaking out in Washington, but we have as voters to hold both to rational compromise. Mine Eyes Have Seen the Coming of the Glory of the Lord!!
