Posted by Gunny We are a country with appoximately 5% of the world population that consumes something on the order of 20-25% of its resources. A family in my semi-rural/semi-suburban neighborhood -- blue collar folk in large part -- owns a house worth conservatively (this is MA) $250 grand. Outside of those houses in every case it looks like the parking lot for a convention -- every family member from 16 up has a vehicle. The most recent studies show that even in this environment taking the family "out" to dinner takes place several times a week even if it is "only" to McDonald's or KFC. Virtually every family member -- unless they are aged or suffer from a mental or physical disability -- can have a job. Contrast that with folk South of the equator. Mexico and Central America being prime examples. Their poverty is abject in the strongest usage of that term. Many of them have no houses other than cardboard or tin shacks, they still rely on horse drawn carts or no form of transport at all. They struggle to provide their children with a minimal amount of food that will keep them from starving. I could go on and on. If you do not believe me travel about 500-1000 miles south of our southern boarder. With these fact you will NEVER -- regardless of whether you threaten and do "shoot them at the fence" -- keep them from coming. A lot of them are already here. They have been here for years. They have a least minimally integrated into our society. Sometimes I wish it was more, but let's face the reality that they have put down "roots", they serve in our armed forces, and they contribute as much or more than an American-bred "welfare queen" (white, black or "other"). The Statue of Liberty which sits in a New York Harbor is a gift from the great folk of France. The inscription on its base -- that greeted my Polish displaced ancestors -- reads, if I paraphrase forgive me: "Give me your tired your poor, you wretched masses yearning to breathe free. I lift my lamp beside the Golden Door." I agree with you in one respect. It is absolutely impossible for this great land, with all good will, to accomodate the millions who live outside our borders. Control of the borders -- short of fences and firing squads I agree with. We cannot continue to take in everyone who wants to come -- although, morally, they do have that right. But your view smacks of vindictiveness and vengence -- let's punish "them" for circuventing "legal channels". More Bush; right is right and wrong is wrong. If we are true the ideals on the Statue of Liberty then we will provide a means for those already here belong as full citizens and not confront them with the bizarre proposition that they should depart and abandon children that were raised here. If that is what you consider an unacceptable "Liberal" view then I say the country still has a long way to go in coming together.

You need to rethink the programming you have been subjected to.
