Posted by Colin on 7/11/2006, 16:07:04 So I've been shaving with blades, which I've never done regularly on my scalp before. I've always found that I get a closer shave with a single blade than a double, but I also cut myself more easily because the angle of attack is less controlled. I finally tried out the sample Mach 3 I'd gotten in the mail and kept for the occasion, and it's much better than any of the double blades, not because of the extra blade but because it's open at the back of the blades so it doesn't clog. I still get a slightly closer shave with a single blade, and my favorite is still the Bic Metal, which only Walgreens seems to carry anymore--thank Google for making it easy to find! The surprise came when I compared shaving in the shower against a quick towel soak. I really never realized how much the longer, warmer soak in the shower would extrude the hair, so that it would shrink back into the skin as it grew over the course of the day. When I shave in or after the shower, my scalp feels and looks just as smooth at least 12 hours later as when I've just shaved! I need to find some kind of hood to put over a towel so I can soak on the toilet when I'm not showering. I get the very smoothest shave using shampoo rather than cream or gel with a single blade. Unfortunately, I get a LOT of nicks if I try to do that without the shower running, and I don't really enjoy shaving in the shower much. My sense of thrift nags at me about running so much hot water, and my flabby muscles just get tired out. So it's good to have the Mach 3 as a compromise, for an easy, smooth shave after a shower.

The times I've shaved my head long ago, I was happy with the shave I got from my Norelco Rotatract, even with years-old blades. When I went to buy new 5-Series blades for it this year, it was cheaper to step up to the floating-head 6 Series and get a whole new shaver. I don't know if it has to do with the different head, a change in my hair or skin, or just a drop in quality, but the shave really wasn't much closer than I'd been getting with the old worn-out blades. When I shaved my head again two weeks ago, it wasn't useful even for a quick nighttime touchup.
