Posted by Gunny I'm not sure I know Obama except from his recently published "The Audacity of Hope", but I suspect he and Patrick speak the same message. What is the "hope" they offer? It can be said honestly that our Deval who I know I no icon of perfection. I think it is the same with Obama. Think about it. Our politics for the past decade or two has consisted in Democrats calling Republicans "Nazis" and Republican calling Democrats "card carrying Communists". Let me share a moment from today's news that tells you why I will vote for Deval Patrick in a heart beat on Tuesday and why I will be "secure" in my choice. Against all odds the man is leading in the polls here by 20 even 40 percent. Political miracle in itself. Bluest of the Blue MA is still a VERY racist state. But because of his lead Deval could be in a position to be gloating. He was with his base today in Roxbury (the black ghetto of Boston). He had a predominately black audience. He could have roused them with an appeal to "the brothers". He did NOT. He said a few good words for his Republican opponent -- serious words about her ideas. The crowd erupted in cat calls and put downs of the Republican. He had the crowd on his side. He could have built on it. HE DIDN'T. He rebuked them. He told them that what they were doing was wrong. He told them, rightly, that you can disagree with someone, even totally and still not demonize them or treat them as some primoridial slime. I'm not certain that Patrick and Obama have credibly different answers from the folk in power now -- most problems are not simply solved. But the prospect of a politican who tries, even without success, to make it less "us" vs. "them" (sounds weirdly like the short vs. long hair wars) is someone who deserves my vote. The politics of "hope" is the promise of "civility".

I have got to spread the word on Deval Patrick the black man poise to be elected the next governor of MA. He will join Barak Obama as an African-American who has the potential to capture the minds of great independent middle. They will together be "rising stars" for the Dems.
