Posted by Colin on 1/11/2006, 9:06:05, in reply to "Re: Must be!" My experience in other arenas is similar. Whether it's at the ball park, in the materials lab, or in a combat-themed role-playing game, women who join in on an equal footing--neither butching themselves up to compete, nor playing up femininity to win favors or sympathy--are usually welcome to be "one of the guys." Of course, my experience is also just as self-selecting as anybody's, so the behavior of the people I choose to be around is naturally colored by my own tendencies. But I think the popularity of these women barbers does speak to a wider trend--they're not catering primarily to wimpy sensitive guys ("Who doesn't know who plays in the Seattle Kingdome?") like me.

and I didn't mean to suggest that the women barbers' customers generally sexualized the experience, either, only that a woman who knew her way around short cuts was just as welcome as a man (and being easy on the eyes was a bonus).
