Posted by Gunny What most consider a fade I think of as a super close taper cut, a regulation cut taken to the extreme. IMHO it is a classic officer's cut. The HT, on the other hand, is more "crude". It is the basic enlisted man's cut (even though worn by officers as well). The HT -- contrary to the numerous variants accepted as such on the haircut boards -- does not resemble a fade in any respect. The HT is the origin of the moniker "Jarhead" as it is applied to Marines. In an HT the back and sides are clippered straight up, to the skin all the way from hair line to crown with no tapering or fading. The result is that the hair on the top of the head looks like it is the "lid" on top of the stright up sides of a "jar". There is an abrupt "demarcation line" where the lid meets the sides. Others may disagree and others may not favor the look -- but that is the distinction that I make.

There is an entire thread debating this topic on THCS board. I am one of those -- without authority other than my own preferences -- who views a "fade" and an "HT" as two very different haircuts.
