Dear All,
I'm writing a psychaitry textbook for medical students and am currently working on the suicide and self harm chapter.
I would be very grateful to hear from any people who self harm or have made suicide attempts (or their family / friends), who can offer any advice:
What have medics (or psychiatrists) said or done that's really upset you? Are there traps that we healthcare professionals fall into?
Cliches we use?
Things that we do that we could easily NOT do - which would enhance our relationship with the self harm community?
AND (just as important):
What things have you found helpful? - whether statements, ways of asking questions, or ways of being.
I'm not here to get into a big discussion about the rights and wrongs - I'd just like to hear your ideas, since it might have an effect on the medical students I teach - and hopefully make them better doctors in the future.
Thanks in advance,
Psych.
