I built one that is about 6' long that I used for 8 years that worked very well. Keith, if there is much moisture in the corn that you are going to put in the trash can, it could spoil; corn needs air movement which keeps it dry and fairly bug free. The best way for you to store a small amount of corn like you are talking about is to put it in a freezer or ref. (with them running of course). If freezing is not an option, you could put a wire bottom in your can, cut a hole under the screen, and put a small fan to the hole and blow air through the corn every week or two. This would be a small grain bin that would keep your corn well, but you would still need to watch it for weevils.
