A while back i saw a segment on Sunday show "60 Minutes" about Russia is way ahead of us in not lasers as weapons, but doing very serious research on particle beam weapons and they have plans to get a prototype working within the next 10 years. Also, i went to a website "Active Denial System" and there's info on how lasers, phasers, magnetisim acoustical/ultra sound weapons and there's some weapons that are theortically possible and those that are NOT possible. I say the ones that are NOT possible Will someday become "real" but not in our time.. I say devices like a "Star Trek" phaser or whatever one calls it will become reality in the FUTURE! This is no crack pot dream. Yes, it's possible that these so-called science fiction devices will become reality. We invented transitors, lasers, and sent man to the moon. Anything is possible..
