Posted by prof.crng on 5/12/2004, 2:37 am Has anyone sent the beam through a mirror or anything else and discovered a thicker beam? btw, protect your eyes when pointing. I pointed my 25mW at a car license plate hung in my garage, and it was dangerously bright. tip: Avoid keeping handheld units, without a heat sink, on for more than a minute at a time, and avoid turning it on and off within 10 second intervals. Avoiding these should prolong the lasers life dramatically.

I have a 5mW and a 25mW handheld laser. I must say the 5mW is near worthless even after modification (unless you replace the resistor from the circuit board and the IR filter). The 25mW is a good purchace if less than $220, but I still seek a more prominent beam. I tested it when directed through different glass, ellipsoid lenses, etc. but no major increase (in most cases a decrease). I then directed the beam off of different types of mirrors, and all but 1 mirror reflected the same beam diameter. When I sent it againt that 1 mirror, the beams width seemed to double in diameter (not knowing why), but it did. I'm positive that the maximum range distance of the beam was decreased, but when pointing I found that I didn't need as much distance (3-4 miles), as I did need a more visible beam. I am at the point where I think if I take that type mirror (about 1 inch in diameter) and bounce the beam through 4 of those, I should get at least a mile of distance from a beam that should have the diameter of a pen and not the thin strand, string like line that it currently outputs.
