I was wondering what the major difference in performance was between a tunable laser and a tunable monochrometer with, say, a xenon flash lamp. As I understand it, the coherence is related to the spectral width, ie, the smaller the width, the longer the coherence length. Is there any advantage to using a tunable laser with a 1nm spectrum width as opposed to a monochrometer with a 1nm slit width?
