did you turn the pot clockwise or counter clockwise?? if you went clockwise you are probably running at full power and going to loose the diode in a short while... feel the case and see if it is getting rather warm after 60 seconds...if it is, re-open the pointer and turn the pot counter clockwise about 120 degrees this should give you about 500 mA at 30 - 45 mW.
