before i state my opinion go ahead and read other opinions and history of Golly. Im a black teen and i personally dont like him for the same reasons other blacks dont, and if youre of european decent i just have to say this... imagine another race (when youre the minority) making images and stories about your culture that do not acurrately depict any aspect of your culture. then imagine him being shown in mass media as a comical figure, while many of the people who see him may be seeing him as the only example of your race that they have ever experienced. and on top of that there is a popular poem that is sung by people of another race (remember your race is the minority and is still fighting for human rights issues) that glorifies the death of ten of your races members.... think about it, it doesnt seem to appealing does it? but for those of you to claim to like golly for the right reasons, i understand you too. after all, golly doesnt portray anything threatening to you or your culture, but i think that if you were forced to defend your race of stereotypes and ignorance daily, as many black people do. you would also want to find the root of those problems, or possible roots of those problems, and shut them down too. golly and black sambo figures for many people, are seen to have these stereotypical characteristics, and reflect the racist aura of the time it was made. to see golly make a comeback now, would be an insulting step backward in the progression of equality.
... but if you have read this far and have still not understood my position, ill leave you with this. No one can laugh about topics regarding themselves, until they have cried over them first. so the funny face and jokes that compose golly, will always be seen as an insult by those of his race since he was not made by someone of his race.
