Some people criticised Enid Blyton's writings , and found alsorts of items to complain about...
There was the fact that Noddy and Big Ears slept together...surely they HAD to be homosexual...
My Plod bashed people over the head with a truncheon..thats Polce brutality, and a bad examply to children...
The Golliwog was portrayed as a band of thieves in one of the Toyland Series books, you are correct, but in the other 23 they were normal inhabitants of Toyland..
Gilbert Golly owned the local garage as I recall...and in other Enid Blyton books, they were mostly good, mischievious perhaps, but not cruel.. Noddy had his moments too, as did the other charactors of her books, showing that even toyland charactors have their good and bad days.......
In the book the Three Golliwogs, the Nigger charactor was changed to Wiggie I think, in the 60s reprint...You must remember in the 40s when the book was originally written, a Nigger was NOT a bad name ..I don't know what it was like here in the States, but in England I can vouch for that..As the times changed, so did the books...
The Ten Little Nigger Boys, was also changed to Ten Little Indians...although I suppose that would have put the back up of the Native American crowd!
Keeping things into perspective, the Golliwog has entertained children of ALL colours through the years..My white and black school friends owned Gollies..as well as teddy Bears...We didn't see 'colour' in the doll, anymore than we saw 'colour' in each other...
Its too bad we have to grow up!
