Hello, I'm a black person and I love them. An object is essentially just that, a piece of cloth a few buttons etc, but it's the mental association you put on an object which makes it what it is - it all depends on what's going on in your own mind. To me they're just extremely cute characters that make me smile and that's all I want to do in this lifetime - smile. Symbol of oppression? I don't feel as if anyone can oppress me. I may have to be more inventive to get around certain attitudes that a minority of people hold but it leads to personal growth which is the bottom line of life.
