Hmmm... it's interesting to see that Robertson's account for 0% of the golliwog's popularity in yr poll. Here in the UK, their trademark until 2001 - the Golly character - was always immensely popular and is now highly collectable. I feel that this loveable character always portrayed an extremely positive outlook... if these characters are indeed representations of black people, then how can portrayals of them in every profession be demeaning? There are Golly firemen, astronauts, policemen, pilots, sportsmen, musicians, superheroes... even Winston Churchill and Elvis Presley Gollies, for goodness sake! While I recognise the huge influence of the Uptons, KIDS!, etc., I shall have to give my vote to Robertson's for their magnificent defense of the Golly image for many decades, albeit now a lost struggle. Golly is NOT racist... long live the golliwogg!
