I had a black doll in the 50s as well as a Golliwogg...They were quite common...they were dolls and came in all shapes and sizes and colours..Oriental ones as well...
Those of us that owned Gollies when children didn't connect them to colour or to people,it was a bloomin' DOLL....
I had some little black firnds in school, but I didn't say hey I have a doll that looks like you, In fact I didn't even think of that...
I do wish people could get it through their heads that the Golliwogg is quite simply a DOLL like any other doll.It was made to be cuddled, dragged everywhere with its little owner, slept with, and generally loved to bits..
It comforted many a child during the WW2 in England...I have seen many war movies where the children are evacuated to the country and are cuddling their Golly as they board the train, thats all it was made for...For children to play with, and be a friend...What on earth is so bad about that??
It is quite wearing to have to explain this over and over again..but I will, as long as people still call the Golliwogg a racist figure.
