SAVE OUR GOLLY!
Posted by Enelar on 12/20/2006, 1:44 pm Frankly, I think PC is a load of crap and trying to erase history because it's not PC is even moreso. Beloved American characters like Mickey Mouse were inspired by blackface too and were even shown portraying characters such as "Uncle Tom". Should we ban them too? Do people look at Mickey Mouse and think he's demeaning to blacks? "Golliwog" being used as an insult to dark skinned people hardly has anything to do with the doll, a lot of words take on meanings that weren't intended. "Gay" use to mean happy, a "fag" use to be a cigarette and a cracker started out as food. Any thing anywhere can be an insult, I've seen people use the words "Barbie" or "doll" to put down people yet Mattel still makes thousands of Barbies despite the fact that some adults have misused her name. In short, I'm planning to invite a Golly into my house as soon as I find one that catches my eye and I intend to share his magic with everyone who needs a smile or a cheery old chap to depend on.

I doubt this place is still active but.. it's worth a shot. I discovered Golly this week while researching Victorian England and black slavery so if someone wants to say I don't know the Golliwog's history, I beg to differ. To me, Golly doesn't even look like a person moreless a black person. He's like a gnome or a magical creature from a fairytale. He's not white, black or any other color, he just is. The early Golly's seem more human but I've noticed that he's become more and more of a cartoon. To be honest, he reminds me a little of a gingerbread man.
