SAVE OUR GOLLY!

How can people think Gollies are racist? Mine isn't; he's nice to everyone.
Golly will always live in the hearts of people who HAVE hearts. The woman who wrote the first Golliwog books said 'Children see his beautiful spirit.' I think that's true of the child in all of us. People who think he represents a racist charicature are shutting themselves off from a source of joy (joy, being hard to come by, shouldn't be rejected because of a surface impression. The world needs it too badly).
If a racist is a person to whom colour matters, and a non-racist is one to whom colour DOES NOT matter, then why should Golly's colour be anything to worry about? What would people think if a white child made friends with a dark-skinned child of African or Carribbean descent, brought the friend home to play, and the white child's parents became furious and wouldn't allow the black child in their house? Racist, right? And absolutely insane.
So how is it any different with Gollies?
I have absolutely no patience with racism and I love my Golly. It's up to Golly lovers to show by word and DEED that we're not bigoted gits!
To anyone who is offended by Gollies I do offer my sincerest hopes that you can understand that to MANY Golly lovers he doesn't represent anything REMOTELY racist. To me he's a perfect symbol of a happily integrated world.
Spread the word, not just the jam.
Anna and her Golly.
