Golliwog was not always the hero. The Upton lady that u speak of did not invent the golliwog. She was simply the first one to write a book about him. Also, there were many books that depicted the dolls as being mischievous and cruel. In fact, there is one particular book that i remember in which the picture on the cover is a golliwog being hung. You obviously havent done your research, and if you have you are just looking at the debate from one side. I understand that in SOME books the golliwog was not a bad character, but it is still a bad and offensive stereotype.
