Hi all,I live in Britain and ever since I can remember,at least 4 members of my family have had gollies since being small.
My eldest son,now 21 also had a golly bought for him when he was born and took it everywhere with him.Its smiling face always settled him when he was feeling grumpy etc.
One of my younger sons,now aged 5 also has a golly but it took much finding.He adores it.It sits proudly on the end of his bed and goes out with us on day trips.
I honestly can't see the reason why they were criticised so much.I can sort of understand the view of black people that they see it as some sort of ridiculous,jokey character that people make fun of but its far from the truth.We love them because they're so happy-looking and adorable.I cetainly don't see them as a character of ridicule.I've bought them for my children because they remind me of happy times as a child when I had my much-loved one.They love theres' just as much.I have to add here that I have 2 members in my close family who are black and they don't see the golly as racist.When my brothers-in-law come round I don't feel like I've got to hide them away or anything.They see them as a much-loved toy as we do.
Also,if we take the view of some people that they are ugly and made to make black people feel ridiculed,then all I can say is look at the Cabbage Patch Dolls.They're white dolls and they are the ugliest things going in my book.We don't want them banned because they make the white population look ridiculous and stupid.There are some really ugly,monstrous white dolls about and yet they don't cause any offence.
I really want to see the golly kept alive and well.I only wish that Gypsy Rose had a golly site for people wanting things in Britain.I'm not too good on converting dollars etc and don't have a credit card to pay for the lovely things I've seen that I'd like.
