Susie, I'm very distantly related to the Lawson family, through marriage. (Not sure exactly how, my grandmother could have told me...unfortunately, she is deceased...) Most of my family came from the same area that Charlie Lawson was originally from, so not really a surprise that there is an tenuous relationship there. My suggestion would be to talk to people in the Walnut Cove/Germanton area. There are alot of people still left there that were close relatives or friends.
