I would machine the flat on the housing as shown in the plans ( D&E )
That way the two rails would have better chance of alignment.
Also , I would take the step to build a fixture to maintain the rails in alignment during soldering.
I did not pre tin. Only clean well and use the proper
flux. i had better luck with the high temperature "soft solders " than the silver solders.
