Jason,
I have been making gatling guns for 40 years, in minature form. From 4 inches to 4 feet. None of my guns fire, they are static models. Although the barrels do turn with dummy bolts, the wheels rotates, and it also elevates. I am a scratch builder.
The only thing that I buy is the gear assembly, I cannot cut gears.
I recently completed a 1862 gatling in quarter scale, this is my second one, serial number 002. A non fire, which took approx. 1000 hours to make. And no I did not add an extra zero, 1000 hours!
A man in Texas who goes by the name of Joel Morrow, has one of my guns. You can see it at the following website:
www.1800miniature.com
The information on his website though claims that it is a 1869, meanwhile it is an 1865, in 1/7 scale, he has it as 1/6 scale.
It took me about 6 months to make one on the average of 25 hours a week. Keep in mind that I have my fixtures already made, which makes it easier in the long run.
The machinery that you would need would be a lathe 9 inch, a small milling machine, a small sanding belt machine, and other small hand tools.
There are a lot of other things that I would love to share with you, but it would take far too long to write all here.
The best thing to do for the barrels is to buy a blank barrel by the calliber, and machine it to the outside diameter. Otherwise you would have to buy and make a riffling machine.
Hope that helped you out a little. I am not computer savy and am not the jovibabe, just using my daughters email address.
Lots of luck.
Just so you know, I started my hobby with a small unimat lathe, if youre interested in the lathe it is for sale. Just send an email to my daughter at jovibabe3285@msn.com
