Jack,
send some of that melting sunshine our way please! I did what you're thinking by soldering a piece on the bottom with the idea of getting the cartridge as close as possible to the carrier block. I would surely try the thing without adding anything at first. I've found that filing a 45 degree X .100" corner break on the right hand side of the base bottom (viewed from the gun back)helps. It all depends on how cleanly the shell drops from the stick magazine. Feeding those darn .22 bullets is the hardest part
