Sonny, I'm not the best machinist in the world and I'm not there to see your particular problem, but I'm willing to try a few comments. Brass tends to try to "suck" a sharp drill into it. I make a lot of guns and thus grind the "rake" off a special drill to keep it from "cork screwing" itself into the brass. Another technique is to partially lock the spindle quill to provide drag against letting the drill pull itself down. I'm self taught so the professionals out there will probably laugh, but it works for me.
