"and how much work is required to make the finished gun (in terms of machining and metalworking)? Would it be a doable operation for a shlub like me with no machining experience (in other works, how much metalworking experience would I need to complete this project)? "
I'd say it would be very challenging and you would need to take your time and develope the skills along the way. Its going to be a long project especially for someone with little skill to start.
I've got over 10 years in the machine shop, brother a tool and die maker and both of us thought some of these parts were kinda hard.
Noone can predict how long it would take you. If I had all the material, equipment ect it would take me at least two weeks(probably 4) full time. I've trained people and I found very simple things to me took them a very long time to make and they screwed them up. This will be a very long, very educational project for you.
I'd say when you got to the harder stuff to do trial runs with plastic or some cheap material. Your going to scrap stuff out. If your creative you can probably save on that kit material price. I'm scrounging a lot of stuff.
You should consider taking a machining course at a tech school and making friends with a competent machinist. There is a metalworking newsgroup where you can get lots of great advice.
A very stupid ex boss said something once that I found almost profound. Making stuff is one step at a time and when I look at things that way nothig is too hard.
Look for a mentor 1st would be the best thing and to me only practical idea
