: Yes there is much hope, so often, people give up on our feathered friends, then they end up being abused, or end up in parrot rescue, I volunteer with one. I have a 5and 1/2 yr. old congo, storm,, named for his energy, had him since 3 months old... I read constantly about all species of parrots, been involved with them for 10 years, I ask many questions to breeders, parrot organizations, so on to learn as much as I can,,, please, do not give up on your bird,, I hope what I can share with you helps, first lets forget about for a moment , the abuse, any parrot is a un-domesticated wild animal,,, we must repect that, they are not a dog or cat, biggest mistake for the wide eyed shopper,,,, often dissapointed and the parrot suffers, the african grey like the cockatoo, are very emotional parrots, they reflect owners feelings ,moods,as individuals, learn like people no 2 are the same..... patience, KEYWORD>>>>.... I volunteer at a rescue where of 40 parrots 8 can be dangerous, why?? prior abuse,, case 1, red, a green winged macaw,,, 28 yrs, set in his ways, beat my men with broomsticks to move him around, red hated everyone, he's severely injured some volunteers, I had only been ther 1yr, 1/2 but I secretely had hope for red, he became my project, I give all day on wednes. thats it, one day for 1 yr,,, guess what?? I can now touch him through the cage as he pushes his back to me to be scrathced,,, and trusts me so much he no longer watches me he looks the other way while I scratch,,,, that is a milestone for red, sometimes he will lunge,,, much work to be done, but, progress has been made,, red hates men but now is letting a few others touch him,,,, he will let me scratch him for 10-15 min. and not try to hurt me... ok, back to your bird,,,,, what kind of abuse did your bird sustain??? also, about the age of your grey,, it should be coming out of the terrible two-s period.... soft calming voice is best smile to and give lots of love constantly praise when your bird does anything good,,, do not yell or do anything negative for negative behavior, to a parrot this is still attention and they will repeat bad behavior more,, when your bird does good things be very happy show it, let it know he's she's the best grey God ever produced, and you love him/her.... allow proper time out of cage, bad behavior well back to cage a brief time out , 10- min. or so til we get it out of our system... a calm no works for me, not acceptable to mom, greys are as smart as 4-5 yr. olds, when I used to get bit, well I say mom doesn't hurt or bite you, no hurt momma, bite is bad,,,, no bite,,,, and once in awhile I had to take a bite,,, as all parrot owners do sometimes, its how we react, think about how YOU react,,, raise voice? carry on?? how did you handle it,remember parrots like some people they LOVE DRAMA,,,,, i will suggest a great book for you to get right to the root of problems,, BIRDS OFF THE PERCH got it in petsmart, by Larry Lachman psy.d ,Diane Grindol and Frank Kocher D.V.D sure you can get it anywhere,,, treat bird as you are dealing with a 4 yr old child mentally.. provide lots of toys, time out, food can bring on neg. acts.. or lack of,, birdie getting fresh fruits,? veggies??? easy on the seeds, lots of fresh water??? is bird being kept clean?? ALL of these things will reflect on the birds mental state,, are there young loud children living in your home, ?a dog or cat???? what makes your bird fearful??? besides prior abuse trauma,,,,, this too will pass by putting in check all of the above... how about cage size sometimes we get birds from 2nd hand owners really too small for the bird,,,, my bird now has a 36 wide x 36 depth by 44 high with play top which he never uses he has to be with mom when hes out, my parrot has learned to entertain himself well, while i am not here, i keep a radio soft station on while at work,,,, all in all give lots of quality time, get that book and if you need to contact me please do, dont give up on your bird,,,,,, sincerely Madelynn e mail congoparrot@hotmail.com
