My ten-year-old African grey occasionally has the same "problem" with his beak, and some large chips come off from the outside surface of the beak. Tonight a huge piece came off (maybe a third of the outer beak surface), but it did not bleed, nor is he in pain. Of course I was frightened. He seemed to flick his head to dislodge it. He had just finished several chicken bones, which I often give him. I put the chip into a baggie to show our vet if he develops a problem in the next several days. He is happily preening on my shoulder at the moment, so I am the only one who is distressed! Thanks for any comments. Years ago, when we used to clip his wings much more than we currently do, he had a bad fall and his beak bled profusely, so I am very sensitive about this. Our vet got the bleeding stopped, but I remember how awful it was for Madison. We had to feed him with an eye dropper for several days. Now we have a much-revised method of grooming---just the first two flight feathers and very little off the claws. Lyn
