I would DEFINITELY suggest reading a book called "My Parrot, My Friend", it goes into great detail about parrot behavior. I think every bird owner should read this book; it gives wonderful insight into the fact that birds are so much different than domesticated dogs and cats. They are still very much wild.
There was a case study similiar to yours, a little exxagerated though. This bird would stare down the wife and then chase her into the other room. I don't really think your bird is being playful, I think it is trying to keep your wife out of your relationship. A bit of a love triangle! It would probably be a good idea to keep the bird off the floor and train it to stay on a playstand. That will give you more control and keep the bird from feeling like it can rule the roost. Plus, birds can get into trouble on the floor (wires and things) if you aren't looking for a second.
