7 year old not letting us pick him up

I have a 7 year old African that doesn't like for us to pick him up. In fact, when I come into the room, he runs to the back of the cage. I have to scare him off the cage in order to hold him. I know that I'm about the 4th person to have him; could this be something to do with it?
