Hi northerner, I am from the north as well. I had just competed in an Ice fishing derby this past saturday. It was a lot of fun. I did not place but more than 50 pikes were caught and a hand full of pickeral. A 98 centimetre pike won the derby. My pike was only 53 centimetres. The weather was not that friendly, -30 plus windchill... Anyhow lots of fun. More than 300 turned out to try and place at this $20,000 derby. There is another derby scheduled for March and that too is a big one.
